FAQs

  • Kiln-dried firewood is heat-treated to remove moisture, pests, and mold β€” ensuring an easy light and clean burn. Seasoned firewood air-dries outdoors and measures around 20% moisture or below. Seasoned firewood is cut to 16”.  If you need a special cut that is dry you will need to order kiln dried wood.  Special length cuts can be between 12”-22”.

  • Most Northwest homes use 2–6  cords per winter, depending on home  size and usage. If you are burning in a wood stove everyday as a primary heat source you want a minimum of three chords. Our kiln drying of firewood makes it easy to stock up early or re-order mid-season.

  • Yes β€” we bring efficient log-processing right to your property using our upgraded Dyna SC-14 that handles logs up to 21–22β€³ in diameter. We average about 1-2 cords per hour on larger logs. The dirtier and smaller diameter the wood, the longer it takes to process. We DO NOT split rounds. Whether you have a small homestead or need us on a larger contract (100+ cords), we will be happy to process your logs.  It is best to have a loader to load logs on to our machine.  If you need a skid-steer we can bring that to your property and load for an additional hourly rate.  Let us take the hard work out of firewood and get your wood for the year done in one day.

  • Hardwoods like maple and birch are denser and burn longer, offering higher heat output per log. Choosing a specific species is more costly because we have to sort through log piles to choose the species you want. They also take longer to dry if you buy green β€” but they deliver premium performance. And of course our Kiln drying service gets you the most efficient ready to burn wood.

  • Green or unseasoned firewood is 25% moisture or above.  Seasoned firewood is below 20% and semi dry is 20-25%. We have green firewood available year round.  Buying green firewood to season yourself is a great way to save money. The best time to purchase green firewood is in the early spring or summer.

In our damp Northwest climate, green firewood typically takes 6–12 months to season properly β€” hardwood takes longer than softwood like Douglas fir.  Alternatively leaving your wood in the sun to dry during the summer also speeds up the process. It is essential that green firewood has good airflow in order to dry.  If it is exposed to the sun it will dry even faster. Hardwoods take longer to dry so it is important to order early if that is your preference.

  • For clean, safe burning, aim for a maximum 15%–20% moisture content. Our kiln-dried wood is tested to meet that standard, usually measuring below 15%. Kiln dried wood is environmentally friendly because it is better for air quality as it puts off less smoke.  Ideally you should be able to see through the smoke coming out of your chimney which is best achieved through kiln drying.

  • Store firewood off the ground, under cover, and with airflow around each stack. Avoid wrapping tightly with tarps β€” ventilation prevents mold and tarps accrue condensation. If your firewood is seasoned or dry you can store it indoors like a shed or a garage. If you are purchasing green firewood it needs to be stored in an area with really good airflow.

  • Properly dried wood feels light, shows surface cracks, and rings with a clean β€œclack.” Wood is considered ready to burn if it measures below 20%moisture. Seasoned and Kiln Dried wood will always be ready to burn.  At certain times of the year we may sell semi dry wood which is specifically labeled and priced accordingly.  This wood could be burnt outside right away but needs 2-8 weeks to continue drying(time depends on proper storage) for indoor burning.  This is wood that is mostly dry, some pieces may be more wet than others. but the majority of it will be ready to burn soon. When shopping for firewood you will encounter people claiming wood is seasoned when it is not. You can buy a wood moisture meter at most hardware stores, this helps you to know if the wood you are buying is ready to burn.

  • The best firewood for the Pacific Northwest is seasoned or kiln dried wood from logs that come from our local mountains. Most commonly maple, alder, douglas fir, and smaller amounts of birch and hemlock. Hardwoods like Maple, Birch, and Hemlock are considered the best because of their high heat output and long burn times. Kiln Dried wood is the best as it burns hotter, longer, and cleaner than standard seasoned wood.  Kiln dried wood is also more environmentally friendly as it puts off the least smoke of all firewood. You should be able to see through the smoke you burn.

At Sibi Firewood, our 5-star Google-rated, family-owned business has delivered premium kiln-dried wood for over 6 years.
